Chondrite Meteorites

Build on your collection or bring home your first extra-terrestrial stone with our collection of chondrite meteorites at Fossils UK. A subsection of stony meteorites, chondrites are meteorites that have not been modified by melting or differentiation of their parent body. Chondrites are incredibly common within meteorites, making up around 85%-87% of the total observed and recovered meteorites. All of our authentic chondrite meteorites at Fossils UK are ethically sourced and hand-selected directly from finders, collectors and dig sites. Chondrites don’t undergo melting or differentiation because they were part of a parent body that was never large enough for these processes to occur. Despite never reaching high enough temperatures to melt, many chondrites reached temperatures that caused significant thermal metamorphism in their interiors. Their age has led to many well-researched theories on where this heat could come from, with one possibility being energy from the decay of short-lived radioisotopes. Our collection features fragments of various sizes and weights for your study and enjoyment.

    What are chronodites made of?

Due to their age, chronodites are, in some ways, a physical and chemical representation of the primitive solar system in which they were formed. There is variation among different groups of chronodites, but many share similar compositions to the sun due to the primitive nature of their origin. The key difference between the chondrite and sun compositions is that chondrites don’t feature the gas-forming elements and noble gases. Rich in silicate materials, chondrites often achieve an attractive and eye-catching finish.
