How rare is it to find a Megalodon tooth?

Megalodon teeth are rare, but not impossible, especially if you know where to look. These teeth were fossilised over millions of years under specific conditions, which means only a small percentage survive intact. Most commonly, complete Meg teeth are unearthed in regions like the southeastern United States or parts of Africa and Asia, where marine sediment has preserved them well.

How are Megalodon teeth measured & graded?

Measurement: To ensure full accuracy, Megalodon teeth are always measured with digital callipers. The teeth are measured diagonally from the corner of the root to the tooth’s tip. If the two measurements at the corners differ, the longer side is the official length.

Grading: Key factors that determine the grading and evaluation of Megalodon teeth include the following:

    • Enamel Quality: Light, well-preserved enamel can result in a Megalodon tooth receiving a very high grade, while duller enamel may make fossils less appealing to high-end collectors.

    • Serrations: If the sharp, cutting edges of the former king of the ocean are still intact and noticeable, they can create a strong desire among collectors due to their rarity and preservation.

    • Root Structure: A symmetrical, complete root enhances a  Megalodon tooth’s aesthetic appeal and collection value. However, chips and imperfections are good indicators of authenticity.

    • Colour & Appearance: Vibrant coloured teeth can be incredibly alluring to collectors. Teeth that stray from the common shades of brown and grey are sparse.

How can I tell if my Megalodon tooth is real?

Look for weight, colour, and serration to determine whether you have a real Megalodon tooth. Real fossilised teeth are mineral-rich and heavier than expected. They often exhibit natural imperfections, such as chips or cracks, and have muted, earthy colours resulting from fossilisation. If your tooth looks too perfect or is bright white, it could be a replica or a modern shark tooth.

    How valuable are Megalodon teeth?

The market for Megalodon material has grown dramatically over the last decade. Size is undoubtedly the biggest driver of value. Specimens over six inches command astronomical prices because they're rare. An intact bourlette and flawless serrations also significantly increase collector appeal. Educate yourself on how to avoid fake listings when investing. Reputable dealers will always disclose if a tooth has undergone restorative work or if multiple fragments have been combined.
