How do we book?
Booking is essential, particularly during the summer school holidays as during these periods the fossil trips are booked up at least 5 weeks in advanced.
To make a booking please telephone our retail outlet “Natural Wonders” on 01947 821363.
What is the trip?
This “fossil hunting trip” has been designed for complete beginners, and is designed to show people how to go about fossil collecting in a safe and responsible manner.
The trips are very tide dependant and as such we have designed these trips based on the best possible tide times. If we have not got a fossil hunt in the week you are coming then the tides will not be good enough for fossil collecting.
We have a minimum age for children this year of 6 years old and over only as the trip is not suitable for children below this age due to the distances walked and the terrain which is walked.
What does the trip involve?
The trip is run by Byron Blessed, a qualified palaeontologist and fossil hunter
The trips are very tide dependant and as such we have designed these trips based on the best possible tide times.
The trips therefore leave from our fossil shop “Natural Wonders ltd” on Grape Lane, Whitby, at the allocated time very promptly so please arrive 15 minutes before the trip leaves.
Please check with the corresponding date for the start time. If you are running late or not arriving please call us we have a 24 hour answer machine.
After depature we make our way up to coastal path via Whitby’s ruined abbey, then down the the next bay south (Saltwick Bay, approx. 1.5 miles out of town).
The trip can be strenuous and is not for everyone, especially those who have difficulty walking or are unsteady on his or her feet. Please feel free to ask questions at the time of booking if you are unsure.
We then make our way down the beach where a brief talk is given into how to go about fossil hunting and we then look for fossils (yes you can keep what you find!). We head back to Whitby along the foreshore stopping every so often to take in geological features and dinosaur footprints.
How long does it take?
The trip is 3 miles in length (1.5 miles out and 1.5 miles back) and 3 hours in duration. Please put at least 4-5 hours on your car parking. There is a drinks stop half way near to where we travel down to the beach.
What time does it leave?
The trips are always based around the best tides unfortunately this means that not all of them are at weekends. These trips leave at various start times prompt (please check the leaving times with the dates and at the time of booking). Please come a little before (15 minutes) so everyone can be issued with tickets, and please give plenty of time to find a car parking space and put enough on your car park ticket for the more than the length of the trip!
Do we need to bring anything?
Please bring VERY SENSIBLE FOOTWEAR! NO TRAINERS! Wellies or hiking boots are preferred. There is standing water about when down on the beach so wellington boots would be best. Especially for the children. Trainers are not sensible for this walk. You may want to bring a change of footwear and socks for afterwards. Also please bring appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. Also you may want to bring a bag to put your finds in!
Do we need to know anything else?
Please note that this trip is strenuous and can be very slippery under foot. Therefore it may not be accessible for extremely elderly people, people with heart difficulties, people with walking difficulties, very young babies, and it is definitely not suitable for prams and buggies due to the terrain. If you are unsure please call us with your questions beforehand to make sure it is for you.
Also if you have booked and are not planning on turning up for whatever reason please do let us know. You can always leave a message on the shops answer machine.
Hope to see you all soon.
