Large Classic British Upper Lias, Lower Jurassic Snakestone Ammonite from Kettleness, Nr. Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. (SKU A0270):- Snakestone

A matrix-free, double sided prepped, stunning prepped classic “snakestone” ammonite. Snakestones (or st. hilda stones) are a piece of British folklore. Legend has it that when st hilda arrived at whitby abbey she found the abbey infested with snakes. the legend then says she cast a spell on them turning them into stone, she cut off their heads and cast them over the side of the cliffs. This is why there are so many “snakestones” to be found on the beaches of whitby. But infact they are ammonites and not a petrified snake. The local artisans would then find these ammonites on the beaches and “carve” the snakeheads back on and sell them to pilgrims and tourists as a lucky charm. This has been done since the Middle Ages and we are the last people to do this work who are based in whitby itself. We have therefore carved a snakeshead on to the original rock that attached to the aperture of this dactylioceras ammonite from whitby. Comes in a high quality display box with a species/locality label. Found:- Bifrons Zone, Upper Lias, Lower Jurassic, Runswick Bay, Nr. Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. Age:- 180 Million Years Old. Size of Ammonite = 8.3 cm (3.25 inches) in diameter. Display Box Size = 13.3 cm (5.25 inches) wide by 15.8 cm (6.25 inches) high.
